Daniel M. Romes, age 91, of Harrison passed away peacefully on January 14, 2024, at The Brooks Assisted Living in Houghton Lake, Michigan.

Celebration of Dan's Life will be announced at a later date. Inurnment of ashes will take place in Maple Grove Cemetery, Harrison, MI.

Dan was born June 21, 1932, in Flint, MI, the son of Peter and Amy (Lockwood) Romes. Dan Graduated in 1950 from Harrison High School. Shortly after graduation, Dan began his working career on the pipeline. His pipeline career was interrupted by the Korean War, and Dan enlisted in the Navy on May 8, 1952. Following bootcamp, he was assigned to the Navy Seabees and deployed to the Philippine Islands for three years, working as a bulldozer and crane operator.

Upon being discharged from the Navy, he entered the Michigan College of Mining and Technology as a civil engineering student. Four years later, he received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. With his degree in hand, he began his career as a design engineer for Harza Engineering Company, Chicago, IL, in June of 1960.   It was there that he and his high school sweetheart, Alice L. Brockway, were united in marriage on November 30, 1961.

In 1964, after tiring of the big city, Dan moved his family back to Kalamazoo, MI, and became an employee of Gove Associates, a civil engineering firm. On July 23, 1965, Dan received his Professional Engineering License. In 1977, he was elected President of Gove Associates, holding that position until retiring in 1997. In 1977 he was also elected President of the Michigan Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Dan returned home to Harrison in 2017, moving from Lillian, AL. Dan enjoyed golfing, hunting, watching college sports, reading, traveling, and visiting historical locations throughout the United States. He is survived by his children, Larry (Colleen) Romes, Robyn Sylvester, Kenneth Romes, and Michael (Rosemarie) Romes; ten grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice; son, Richard; Parents; and three brothers, Thomas, Richard, and Harry Romes.
