Year one under Farwell wrestling head coach Ryan Cutler saw things trend upwards. The Eagles have been battling lack of numbers in recent years, but they are seeing things grow, which they hope continues this year.

“We’re still young overall, but this group is hardworking, coachable and competitive,” Cutler, who is set to enter his second season as coach said. “The energy in the room is great, and we’re seeing improvement every single practice. We should be deeper across more weights than last year, and several freshmen are already showing promise. Last year we took solid steps forward as a program. The kids improved their fundamentals, toughness, and mat awareness, and we’re looking to build off that foundation this season.”

Returning wrestlers include seniors Tyrek Thrush, Philip Cheney, junior Millie McAulay and sophomores Jordan Barnard and Tessa Pipes. New to the lineup will be freshmen Alivia Cutler, Braeden Johnson, Alexis Johnston and Alexis Helmer.

“Our senior, Tyrek Thrush will be key leader this year,” Cutler said. “He's been in the program the longest, understand the expectations, and set the pace in the room. He's vocal when needed, will help the younger wrestlers, and lead by example. Our returning junior Millie McAulay will contribute to the leadership by showing consistency and work ethic every day.”

For team goals, Cutler added he hopes that the team can fill as many weight classes as possible, move up in the conference standings, get more wrestlers to regionals and build consistency and confidence throughout the lineup.

“We’ve emphasized conditioning, hand fighting, solid positioning, and eliminating the small mistakes that cost points,” Cutler said. “We’re also putting a strong focus on pace; pushing matches for six straight minutes and building mental and physical toughness. If we wrestle smart, avoid giving up big moves, and keep our conditioning strong, we’ll be competitive in every dual.”

As for the Jack Pine Conference, Cutler listed St. Louis, Gladwin and Bullock Creek as the top programs.

“(We want to have) a strong start, getting our younger wrestlers comfortable under varsity lights, and identifying early adjustments,” Cutler said of the early season matches. “Mainly, we want to see effort, toughness, and confidence right out of the gate.”

Farwell’s first meet will be Dec. 17 at Farwell.

“I’m proud of this group’s attitude and work ethic so far,” Cutler said. “They’re buying into what we’re building, and we have a good mix of youth and experience. Should be an exciting season for Farwell wrestling.”
