Every county in America has a role to play in honoring the veterans who served our country. In Clare County, we honor the brave men and women in uniform by connecting them to the benefits, care and community they deserve.
Now more than ever, our veterans need our support. The latest federal data show that in a single recent year, nearly 6,400 veterans died by suicide, an average of more than 17 every day. That number has decreased slightly in the most recent reporting, which is real progress, but there are still 17 families a day left with an unanswerable loss. Behind every one of those figures is someone who once raised their hand and volunteered to protect the rest of us.
This November, we’re renewing our commitment to closing that gap in a very visible way. From Nov. 4-11, Clare County is joining counties, parishes and boroughs nationwide, through the National Association of Counties and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers, in Operation Green Light for Veterans, an initiative designed to shine a light on the service of our veterans and their families.
As part of Operation Green Light for Veterans, Clare County is illuminating all county buildings green beginning Nov. 4-11, and we encourage individuals and businesses to join us by changing one light bulb in the entryway of your home or business to a green bulb. By shining a green light, we let veterans know that they are seen, appreciated and supported. We’re ensuring that no veteran in Clare County wonders whether their service is remembered.
