New Salon Suite Blooms in Harrison

HARRISON – After 10 years working in salons and teaching cosmetology as a licensed cosmetology instructor Harrison native Torrie Aldrich has created a salon suite of her own named Bloom & Co.

The concept of a salon suite cropped up in the beauty industry after the COVID-19 pandemic. The concept of a small salon space with just one stylist and serving just one client at a time suits Aldrich perfectly.

“Salon suites have really taken off since COVID, more so in big cities,” she said. “I never wanted to be a salon owner, but I kept telling my husband about buildings I saw for sale. One stylist, it’s more of an intimate setting with clients. Karen has been a client of mine for years and offered this space to me. So, I came up and checked it out and jumped in and didn’t look back.”

Being in charge of herself, setting her own hours and taking the clients and practicing certain styles appealed to Aldrich. She doesn’t enjoy doing perms or fashions colors (bright pinks, blues, etc.).

“I am appointments only. No walk-ins. I like to look at my schedule each day and know what I’m doing. I’m a planner. I can specialize in the areas I want to specialize.

“Some people have hard moments in their life, and they may want to talk about those and vent. We are kind of hair therapists sometimes. The intimate setting is so much better.”

Aldrich hasn’t ruled out another stylist joining her in the same salon suite concept in the future.

Aldrich previously was a stylist at Shear Indulgence in Harrison and Che Bella Salon in Clare. She misses her fellow stylists, and she’s happy to send those walk-ins requests to Shear Indulgence, the salon she left to begin her own suite.

The location in the Country Flowers building appealed to Aldrich. Her grandparents had a restaurant in the location called the Picnic Basket many years ago for a brief time. Her grandparents were Dale and Norma (Hoard) Sharp. Dale was a barber and went by the nickname Colonel Sharp. Aldrich’s earliest influence was her grandmother Norma.

“I grew up going to her house and she had a salon in the back room. As soon as we would get dropped off to their house, that’s where I would run to and play with her stuff. She was my biggest inspiration to what I wanted to do when I grew up. It feels full circle.

“I’d always play with her round brush, and it get it stuck in my hair no matter how many times she told me not to touch it.”
