Library Completes Nature Art Wall Mural

Posted

With progress being made daily on the former Surrey House building to become the new home of the Harrison District Library, one project has already made an impact on Harrison’s downtown.

On the east wall of the building facing Budd Lake, local artist and high school art teacher Ian M. Humphres has painted a beautiful mural depicting wildlife.

The mural project was somewhat of a replacement for the porch concerts held when the library first acquired the Surrey House building. The concerts naturally progressed to the splash pad and town square feature when it was opened at the corner of Main and Second streets in conjunction with the Harrison City Market.

According to Harrison District Library Director Sheila Bissonnette, the library still wanted to promote the arts in Harrison. The project was supported by a grant from Michigan Council for Art & Cultural Affairs and the Saginaw Arts & Enrichment Commission.

The project also caught the attention of Harrison’s Downtown Development Authority (DDA which agreed to fund landscaping and other equipment for the project. The DDA will add a mural offering to their business grant program which was established last year.

The library hopes to be fully operational in the former Surrey House location in 2023.
