It’s still the middle of the high school football season, but Friday’s road Jack Pine Conference game at St. Louis felt like an important one for Harrison. So, when the Hornets earned a hard-fought 52-32 victory, they naturally felt pretty good about what they accomplished.
“Big win for us,” head coach Jamie Lipovsky said. “We played great offense, led by great blocking. Our offense requires eight people to block, two to run fakes and one to hide and conceal the ball. We had 11 kids doing just that Friday night. We have to be better on defense, but St. Louis had a couple of great running backs that were hard to tackle so we have to give their kids credit. Lots of football remaining. Got to continue to get better.”
Clayten Austin had a huge game running the ball; carrying it 20 times for 302 yards and three touchdowns, including a 77-yarder. Ray Cosgrove ran 15 times for 122 yards and one score, Collin Dennis added 26 yards and one touchdown on the ground and Nyxon Rhodes ran for 21 yards and a touchdown.
Matt Latunski was two-of-four passing for 48 yards and one touchdown, finding Kelton Carlstrom once for a 43-yard touchdown and Hunter Lafeve once for a five-yard grab.
On defense, Alex Jansen had 12 tackles and one sack, Gavin Vanburen, Lafeve and Latunski all had six tackles apiece, Carlstrom had five and Parker Latunski contributed to the cause with three tackles and one sack.
Harrison (4-1 overall, 2-1 JPC) heads over to Pinconning (1-4, 0-3) on Friday. The Spartans are looking for their first JPC victory, and fell to Farwell last week, 20-7.
