Hang’s Chinese Restaurant Continues American Dream

Second Generation Success Began in Harrison

The Hang family has been running a restaurant in Harrison for more than 30 years. Lee Hang began Lee’s Chinese Restaurant on First Street which was later taken over by his nephew Doua Hang and moved next door in its current location. Now Doua’s sons Blon and Yang, and longtime manager Kellie Griffith have taken over the business. All three are Harrison graduates.

Blon and Yang both live in Grand Rapids and own and manage five other restaurants. They still have the family home in Harrison, and Yang Hang explained the place Harrison has in their hearts and in their business.

“Hang’s is the one that started it all,” he said. “It all came from this restaurant. A lot of our business is from locals. Without them we wouldn’t be in business. It’s our locals that have supported us.”

Those ties are important to the family.

“Harrison is a great place,” Hang said. “We have been here for so long. Our business is mostly takeout. It’s always been mostly takeout, even from Lee’s. 10 chairs or 30 chairs, it's been takeout. We are still here, the next generation. We survived COVID and even though Blon and I aren’t here all the time, Kellie is here and qualified. She has been managing for over a decade. She was Mom and Dad’s right hand.”

The elder Hangs are now retired as is their great-uncle Lee.

“An employee became an owner and that is a good story,” Hang said. “Only in America can this happen. My dad came to this country with nothing and for him to be where he is today and live the American dream – try to do that somewhere else in the world and you won’t have the ability to do that.”

Last week was the restaurant’s first full week open for lunch hours since the pandemic. Hang’s faced many of the same challenges as other businesses since 2020 with staffing and supply chain issues.

“Post COVID there are a lot of challenges too,” Hang said. “COVID was a whole different story. We are open back to full hours since before COVID, about three years. We are optimistic. We are trying to introduce new things to the community, to the menu. Boba tea is really big everywhere. I’m glad we are able to introduce it here. Everybody can go buy a cup of coffee and think nothing of it. In Asia, it’s a cup of boba.

“We have simplified the menu down to the favorites and we focus on those and preparing those expertly,” explained Hang of their menu changes. Don’t worry, all of the favorite combos are still available!

The interior has also changed and been updated. Outdoor seating has been added, and they plan to offer delivery in the near future along with the addition of new items to their menu.
