Hamilton Township Well Work Progressing

No palm trees or camels, but an oasis nonetheless

Posted

HARRISON – Demolition of the old Hamilton Township Hall, located at the corner of East Townline Lake Road and Athey Avenue had been chugging along, and for several weeks had seemed to be stalled with exposed rafters, a partial roof take-off, and the open front door affording access to the unstable, hazardous building. However, the demo was in full swing during the first two weeks of July.

The work had been hindered by asbestos inspection/abatement, and all the things that plague such projects when dealing with older structures. In recent months, however, the demolition commenced in earnest, and with the recent full take-down the plan’s fruition seems to be coming into view.

The site has long been an “oasis” for those interested in collecting pure spring water from a naturally flowing well. The pipe for delivering the water was routed to the northeast corner of the building off the parking lot at the intersection, along with a catch basin for overflow. The well has been continually flowing for many, many years serving residents and visitors to the area. The original well is actually located in a pit under what was the west end of the building, so great care had to be taken with excavation. The plan for reconfiguring access to the well includes a new sheltering structure and unincumbered access at a much safer distance from the roadways.

It is anticipated the new configuration will allow for easier, more effective snow removal as well.
