City of Clare Press Release

On October 10, 2023 at approximately 7 p.m., a vehicle crash occurred at the intersection of 5th Street and Maple street, involving a gray Chevrolet Impala. Preliminary investigations indicate that the vehicle was traveling eastbound on 5th Street at an exceptionally high rate of speed. The driver lost control, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway, strike a telephone pole, and ultimately crash into Clare Auto Service, located at 215 W 5th Street.

Regrettably, the collision resulted in the loss of two lives, one driver and a passenger in the vehicle. The identities of the victims are being withheld pending notification of their families. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the bereaved families during this incredibly difficult time.

The Police Department responded promptly to the scene and was assisted by Clare Fire Department, Surrey Fire Department, Clare County Sheriff Department, Michigan State Police Accident Investigation Unit, and Mobile Medical Response. Their collaborative efforts were vital in managing the situation, and conducting a thorough investigation.

The City of Clare Police Department is urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has additional information to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation. Witnesses are encouraged to contact the City of Clare Police Department at 989 386-2121 or dgarver@cityofclare.gov.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the emergency responders and agencies involved for their swift response and professionalism. Further details will be released as the investigation progresses.
