Farwell baseball takes runner-up at Steve Klinge Memorial

The Farwell baseball team hosted the annual Steve Klinge memorial tournament on Saturday. The Eagles were able to defeat Carson City Crystal 17-1 in the semi-finals, but lost to Breckenridge in the championship, 10-6.

Conner Cousineau got the win over Carson City, going five innings and giving up one unearned run on four hits, five strikeouts and zero walks.

Mason Esterline had three hits, three RBI and two runs, Asher Yarhouse added three hits, three RBI and three runs and Hunter Edlin also had three hits to go along with three runs. Zane Hanna and Cousineau both had two hits and three RBI, Dylan Mitchell had one hit, two RBI and two runs and Blake Sholes had one hit, he drew one walk and he came in to score once.

In the championship, Esterline took the loss, throwing the first three innings and giving up four earned runs on six hits, three strikeouts and two walks. Mitchell went the final four frames and gave up six runs, one earned on nine hits, four strikeouts and one walk.

At the plate, Esterline had two hits and four RBI, Yarhouse got two hits and he came in to score once, Edlin had one hit, two walks and one run and Gavin Brown managed one hit, one walk and two runs.

On Thursday, Farwell hosted Ogemaw Heights in Jack Pine Conference action, earning a split by taking game one 16-15 and dropping game two, 8-7.

The opener saw quite the comeback for the Eagles, who were down late in the game.

“We were down nine runs going into the bottom of the sixth inning and scored six,” head coach Alan Esterline said. “We finished the comeback in the bottom of the seventh with hard-line drive single from Edlin.”

Yarhouse got the win in relief, going three and one-third innings and giving up six runs, two earned on nine hits, one strikeout and one walk. Edlin started the game and struck out six batters and gave up one earned run.

Zane Hanna had three hits and one RBI, Yarhouse had two hits and four RBI and with one hit each was Esterline (three walks), Mitchell (three RBI), Edlin one RBI), Brown (one RBI) and Coussineau.

Brown took the game two loss, going five and one-third innings and allowing seven runs on six hits and four walks.

At the plate, Yarhouse had two hits, two RBI and one walk, Brown had two hits, one run and one walk, Edlin had one hit, one walk and he came in to score twice, and Mitchell had one hit, one RBI and one run. Farwell hosted Harrison on Tuesday, they head for Meridian today (Thursday) and they’ll play at home again on Tuesday, welcoming in Standish-Sterling.
