David Spencer Vannest age 76 of Harrison, passed away Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at his home. David was born January 13, 1949, in Lansing, Michigan, the son of Doris (Zander) Vannest and Maurice Vannest. David left high school and answered the call of duty and began his new journey in the United States Army as a medic, serving his country during the Vietnam War.
David retired from General Motors Corporation after thirty plus years of employment. He had resided in Harrison since 2002, moving from Eaton Rapids, Michigan. David was united in marriage to Ms. Karen Jean Rathbun on October 13, 2013, in Harrison. Mr. Vannest was a member of the V.F.W. Post 1075 of Harrison and American Legion Post 404 also of Harrison. He enjoyed fishing, boating, camping, and hiking the Allegheny Mountains, visiting and socializing with the lake neighbors, as well as cheering for the Detroit Lions and Michigan State Spartans football. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR and solving crossword puzzles. Many will fondly
remember David for his love of Donald Duck and Pirates.
Surviving Mr. Vannest is his wife, Karen Jean Vannest of Harrison, six children; Gary Vannest of Arizona, Ben Vannest of Lansing, Jennifer Vannest of Elsie, Michigan, Victoria Vannest of Lansing, Teresa Lienhart and husband Mark of Rives Junction, Michigan and Tom Johnson of Lansing, eleven grandchildren, his two dogs; Toby and Jasper and Boo Boo the cat, plus many extended family and friends. Mr. Vannest was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather, Richard Campbell and one brother, Robin Cockerell.
Celebration of Life services honoring David will be held Friday, October 17, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. from Clark-Stocking Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service, 165 W. Oak St., Harrison. A time of gathering will be held Friday, October 17, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. until time of service. Military honors will be presented to David immediately following services.
