ITC Michigan will notify more than 50,000 households along the potential routes for the new high-voltage transmission lines by mailer inviting them to help shape the final pathways over the coming months. Several of those lines will pass through Clare County.
There are three Copperton projects planned like spokes in three directions from a substation near Coleman in Midland County. The facility will be upgraded and renamed the Copperton substation.
The project will take years to build and require state routing approval before advancing. Once obtained, developers can use eminent domain to forcibly secure easements from landowners chosen to host 100-foot power poles and 345-kilovolt lines on their properties, so the planning process is extensive.
Developers have unveiled preliminary route options for each and will hold a series of meetings across the affected areas in October to gather input.
