Central Michigan District Health Department (CMDHD) has confirmed a case of measles in an Osceola County resident. CMDHD is working with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) to investigate the case. No public exposure sites have been identified.
Measles is one of the most contagious diseases in the world. It spreads through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or breathes. The virus can stay in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves an area. People who are not protected against measles have a high chance of becoming sick if they are exposed.
"Measles spreads very easily, but it is also preventable," said Taylor Irwin, CMDHD Health Officer. "The best protection is making sure you are up to date on your MMR vaccine. We encourage everyone to check their vaccination records and talk to their healthcare provider if they have questions."
Residents should review their vaccination records to make sure they are protected. Most people are considered protected if they:
Symptoms of measles usually begin 7 to 14 days after exposure but can appear up to 21 days later. Symptoms include:
Anyone who develops symptoms should call their healthcare provider before going to a clinic, urgent care, or hospital. Calling first helps protect other patients and healthcare workers from possible exposure.
The MMR vaCcine is safe and highly effective. One dose provides about 93% protection against measles, and two doses provide about 97% protection. Vaccination also helps protect others who may be at higher risk for serious illness.
CMDHD offers MMR vaccination appointments. To schedule an appointment or speak with a member of the Personal Health team, call 989-314-7570. Walk-in clinic information is available at cmdhd.org/imms. Most health insurance plans cover the MMR vaccine. People without insurance or whose insurance does not cover vaccines may qualify for free or low-cost vaccines through the Vaccines for Children (VFC) or Vaccines for Adults (VFA) programs.
