Clare City Commissioners approved and announced various safety measures around the city and schools at their meeting on May 18.

The city received $14,000 for public safety two weeks ago from the State Tax Commission, reported Vicki Corlew, city treasurer. The amount allocated was based on the city’s violent crime numbers.

The city commission approved a lighting contract with Consumers Energy to add a streetlight at the school crosswalk at McEwan and Wheaton, reported Jeremey Howard, Clare City Manager. The city will be reimbursed for $5,776 by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). The streetlight will provide additional lighting at the intersection to improve the safety of the students and crossing guards at that corner.

The city and school will also split the cost on a new speed radar sign for around the school.

“The purpose of this device is to remind motorists of their speed and help reduce speeding concerns in high traffic areas and high-speed areas throughout our community,” said Howard.

After the meeting was adjourned, Howard talked about how after a wrong application of roundup instead of fertilizer was used, the city is looking for ways to restore spots of grass that were affected on several city properties.

This was not talked about during meeting minutes because it was not on the agenda, since there is no information at the moment or remediation plan.

He said the city is still gathering information, exploring different options and looking at costs. They are looking at how costly it would be to pull out entire sections or if they can do it in pieces.
