Barbara Marie Pitcavage, 87, passed away suddenly on Sunday, March 8, 2026, while vacationing in Santa Rosa, California.
Barbara is survived by her beloved husband, Victor; her siblings Carol and Phil; and her five children: Deborah (Doug), Philip (Suzie), Michael (Laurie), Denise (the late Brian), and Robert (Megan). She also leaves behind numerous grandchildren and great‑grandchildren, each of whom brought her immense pride and joy.
Born on January 27, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan, to Harriet (nee Michaluk) and Joseph Fill, Barbara spent her early years there. She attended Cody High School where she quietly made history, becoming the first girl to take shop class, opening the door for others to follow. She proudly served in the Civil Air Patrol, a volunteer organization that mobilized civilian aviation resources for national defense, search‑and‑rescue efforts, and community service. Barbara graduated in 1957 and soon after met the love of her life, Victor, marrying him two years later and beginning a partnership that would span 66 years.
Barbara and Victor made their first home in Dearborn Heights, where they raised their five children and built a life rooted in family, service, and community. Barbara was deeply involved in Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, the PTA, and served as a cook for the Wallaceville students who attended Mill Lake Youth Camp, where her nourishing meals and cheerful spirit touched countless young lives. She would also bring her children to Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Ukrainian Catholic Church, instilling in them the importance of faith and tradition.
In 1972, Barbara and Victor purchased land in Harrison, a place that quickly became their sanctuary. They eventually made it their permanent home in 1997, embracing the community and the peaceful surroundings they cherished.
A woman of deep faith, Barbara was a longtime parishioner of St. Athanasius Catholic Church in Harrison, where her devotion guided her daily life. She served for many years as the Board of Review Chairwoman for Greenwood Township, offering fairness, dedication, and a steady hand to her community. She was also an active and committed member of the UAW, forming lasting friendships and championing the values of solidarity and hard work.
Barbara’s smiling face was frequently seen at the Harrison American Legion Post 404 or the 40 et 8 in Temple. She liked to joke that she "worked" at the latter, as she was always straightening chairs, collecting empty beer cans, or consolidating the trash to help the club's bartenders.
Barbara will be remembered for her kindness, her unwavering loyalty to those she loved, and the quiet strength that defined her life. Her legacy lives on in the family she nurtured, the community she served, and the countless lives she touched.
Visitation will take place at St. Athanasius Catholic Church from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., with a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m.on Thursday, April 9, 2026. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, and all are invited to a luncheon afterward at the Harrison American Legion Post 404. Those wishing to honor her memory may do so through memorial donations to St. Athanasius Catholic Church, 310 S. Broad St. Harrison, MI 48625.
