9th Annual Freedom 5K Run/Walk to be Virtual Race

Posted

HARRISON – The 9th Annual Freedom 5K in memory of Robert Friese and all those who gave the ultimate sacrifice will be conducted as a virtual run this year, due to the restrictions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a virtual run, participants are able to submit their times online. Prior to 2020, this event was an officially timed 3.1 mile run/walk held in memory of the late Spc. Robert Friese and all those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. The race has been held the last Saturday of April, which coincides with the anniversary date of Spc. Friese.

The cost to participate is $30, and registration ends at 6 p.m. April 24. Proceeds will go to the Veterans Freedom Park.

After much consideration, the choice was made to change the 9th Annual Freedom 5K to a virtual run in order to be in compliance with the Centers for Disease Control recommendations. The race committee asks the public to consider that in the midst of such an unprecedented time, one thing that is certain is this opportunity still remains wherein people can come together for a cause and to remember a local young man and all others who have given the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms Americans continue to enjoy.

All registrants will be able to post their virtual run/walk times on the Results Page between April 18 and 6 p.m. April 25 in order to be part of this event. The plan is to mail race packets, shirts (for those who registered by April 10) and top finisher medals (for those who place) shortly after April 25 to the addresses provided at registration.

Despite the inability to gather together, runners and walkers are encouraged to participate and make this virtual event a fun one, regardless of the current circumstance.
