CADILLAC, MICHIGAN – On Saturday, Oct 1 at 1 p.m. (1300), the Brothers of General Orlando M. Poe Camp 444, Department of Michigan, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) will be performing a three-part ceremony to honor the Civil War Veterans of Harrison, Michigan at the 1916 Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Monument in historic Maple Grove Cemetery.

The three-parts of the services conducted by the SUVCW on 01 October will include honoring Captain Ferdinand Boughton, Company F, 1st Michigan Engineers & Mechanics, paying homage to Charles W. Scott, Company M, 15th New York Heavy Artillery – the Last GAR Veteran of Harrison, and a rededication of the 1916 GAR Monument by ritual of the 1917 GAR Service of Dedication for Monuments in remembrance of all of Harrison’s Civil War Veterans.

The City of Harrison has been highly supportive of Camp 444 during the preparatory activities and for the ceremony itself. Harrison City Manager Justin Cavanaugh explained the importance of honoring Harrison’s oldest Veterans: “It is vital to honor those that served our country, no matter how long ago they served. Without the sacrifices our Veterans have made, our country would not be what it is today.” City of Harrison Councilwoman Angela Kellogg added: “The Sons not only honor our local Civil War Veterans, but all Veterans by caring for and improving the GAR monument, flagpole, and Veterans’ headstones. Their efforts greatly improve Maple Grove Cemetery. Only by continuing to honor our Veterans can we remain a grateful nation to the many sacrifices our military families endured in the past, present, and future.”

The ceremony will provide the public a window into the past of the ceremonies and rituals of the Civil War Veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic. Additionally, the General Orlando M. Poe Camp 444 Honor Guard will be attired in Union Army Engineer and Infantry uniforms.

The public is invited and highly encouraged to attend, and to bring chairs with them if they would like to be seated during the event.
