Rededication of Veterans Monument to be Held Saturday, Oct. 1

In addition to making plans for the rededication of the veteran’s monument at Maple Grove Cemetery in Harrison the Sons of the Civil War General Orlando M. Poe Camp 444 had a gift for the Harrison District Library.

The Sons donated original documents from the Bradley Post #221 to the library’s historical collection. Not only were the original documents given to the library, but scans and transcripts of the material were also shared.

The documents included a handwritten note pad of meeting minutes from 1894 to 1903, various dues receipts, bonds, credentials, and other forms of business from the post.

The names in many of the documents will be honored on Saturday, Oct. 1 as local Civil War Veterans along with all veterans as the Sons rededicate the veterans monument in Maple Grove Cemetery.

Over the last 6 months Poe Camp 444 members have been cleaning and caring for the veteran’s monument, painted the flagpole, and restored GAR flag holders on Civil War graves at Maple Grove. Their efforts have restored the monument almost to its 1916 condition. They worked closely and in cooperation with DPW from the City of Harrison.

The Sons group is not a reenactment troop, they will be in uniform on Saturday for the ceremony. The event will be held rain or shine and if you wish to sit, please bring a chair.
