On January 26, 2023, Richard J. Charbeneau, 91, passed away peacefully after a long and happy life.

Richard was born in Mt. Clemens, MI, on February 23, 1931, to Harold and Lilian Charbeneau. Shortly after he graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School, he joined the Navy and married the love of his life, Barbara Peters on March 17, 1951. After Richard’s service in the Navy, he began working for his father’s beer distribution business. Richard then went on to own, operate, and retire from his retail hardware store in Grosse Pointe Park.

Richard and Barbara were blessed with 6 children who they raised in Mt. Clemens before retiring to Harrison, MI. Richard was a long-time member of St. Peters Catholic Parish in Mt. Clemens, St. Athanasius Roman Catholic Church in Harrison, MI, and the American Legion in Harrison, MI. Richard enjoyed deer hunting with his family, keeping up with the stock market, and watching the Detroit Lions, Detroit Tigers, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Dr. H. Patrick Charbeneau and Lynn Charbeneau; and three of his children Linda Henninger, Thomas Charbeneau, and Robert Charbeneau.

Richard is survived by his wife of 72 years Barbara Charbeneau; children Michael (Suzanne) Charbeneau of Edmond, OK, Mary (Timothy) Mickler of Beaverton, MI, and Steven Charbeneau of Harrison, MI; a son in law Robert Henninger of Memphis, MI, two daughters-in-law Kimberly

Charbeneau of Mt. Pleasant, MI and Kim Charbeneau of Oklahoma City, OK, 14 Grandchildren, and 20 Great Grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass celebrating Richard will be held Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. from St. Athanasius Catholic Church, 310 South Broad St., Harrison with Rev. Father J. Marcel Portelli officiating. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at St. Athanasius Catholic Church from 9:30 a.m. until time of Mass. Military Honors will immediately follow Mass at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Harrison. Burial will be in St. Athanasius Catholic Cemetery, Harrison. family has requested memorial gifts to be considered to: St. Athanasius Catholic Church. A luncheon and time of sharing will immediately follow services at St. Athanasius Catholic Church.
