In October, two veteran buddies were awarded Quilts of Valor by Judy Tritten, Quilts of Valor Foundation representative, at Veterans Freedom Park in Harrison.
John Goodloe of Carleton served in the United States Navy from 1970 to 1972. He served on the USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19). Among the places he served were the Navy Yard in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, Naval Base San Diego, California, and Vietnam. He received the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. He was honorably discharged as an E4.
Peter Petrowski served in the United States Army in 1969, serving at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Due to a disability, he was honorably discharged as an E1.
Richard Smith of Harrison and Kurt Krug of Clare County were awarded Quilts of Valor for their military service by Judy Tritten, QOV Foundation representative, at the Veterans Freedom Park on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.
Smith served in the U.S. Army from 1982-1985. He served in California and Korea. His first duties were as an MP and then as a Target Acquisition Specialist. He reenlisted and was to serve on Abrams tanks but was injured and honorably discharged as a sergeant. He received a letter of commendation, as well as the Army Service Medal and the Overseas Medal.
Krug, a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, was a pilot in the Air Force serving from 1966-1973. He flew B 52s and OV-10s. Krug served in many places including: Vietnam, Thailand, Griffin AFB New York, and Blytheville AFB Arkansas. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and 18 air medals. He was honorably discharged as a captain.
