Part-time Resident Has Full-Time Heart for Harrison Students

Posted

Carol LaForest is a part-time resident of Harrison who recently heard about the need for shoes at Hillside Elementary. With that need filled LaForest investigated other needs of Harrison school district students.

Learning about the clothing and food pantries at all the local schools prompted LaForest to load her van last Thursday, March 5 and make the six-hour, 404-mile round trip to deliver a vanload of coats, clothing and footwear. Fifty-two large bags in all were carefully sorted for donations to the schools, baby pantry and senior home.

LaForest is involved in giving and ministry at the I AM Church in Rockwood, Michigan. Her reason for giving is her remembrance of unfilled needs as a child. Knowing what a difference it makes for someone to give a child a pair of boots or a pair of pants, knowing it could be their only item to wear motivates LaForest.

When faced with questions about her outreach that include putting responsibility on parents to provide for their children Laforest responds, “I don’t care about the parents. I care about the welfare of children who are in need.

“Children need to know they are not in this alone. It doesn’t matter if parents aren’t taking their responsibility.”

LaForest has also started a Facebook group called MOBY which stands for “my own backyard” dedicated to her efforts to serve and inspire.

LaForest said the best part for her was returning home to find six more boxes of donations waiting to come to Harrison next week.
