News from Your Sheriff-March 2025

Posted

Welcome to March Clare County. You know what they say, if it comes in like a lamb it will go out like a lion. Let’s hope that is wrong this year. From the beginning of the year until Feb. 28 there were 5,937 incidents in Clare County. Your deputies handled 4,180 of those incidents. The Clare City Police Department handled 984 incidents, with the Michigan State Police handling 33 incidents. Your animal control officers responded to 44 calls. There were 233 fire/rescue calls, and 463 ambulance runs in the county. There are currently 180 people lodged in the Clare County Jail.

We would like to congratulate Correction Officer Ryan Wakefield on successfully completing the 160-hour corrections academy. Everyone that we hire as a corrections officer is required to complete that 160-hour training academy within the first year of employment. We currently have full staff in the jail for correction officers, but we are always accepting applications that we will keep on file for future need. We would like to congratulate Dispatcher Ryan Williams who accepted a job with FAA Air Traffic Control. He will be heading out shortly to train in Oklahoma. We are currently accepting applications for Central Dispatch. If you are interested in applying for any position at my office, visit www.clareco.net and you will see employment opportunities in the middle of the main page. We are currently staffed on road patrol. We have two deputies that are currently in phase two of our field training program. The two have eight more weeks in training then will be out patrolling solo.

I had the privilege of taking a tour of the new CTE building at the Magnus Center on N. Clare Avenue. They are nearing completion of this facility and will offer a great opportunity to the students in our communities. One of the programs there is for high school students to take a criminal justice program. Not only do they learn about criminal justice, law enforcement, corrections, prosecution and court procedure, but they get to spend time in those areas here locally. Students come to our sheriff’s office and get to take part in our central dispatch, road patrol and jail. All of the programs that are offered through the CTE to high school students will prepare them for their future. I am a big supporter of that facility and the programs that are offered to our area high school students.

I want to wish everyone a Happy St. Patrick’s Day. Please come out and enjoy all of the festivities in Clare this week. There are events all week with the large parade on Saturday at noon.

GOD Bless

Sheriff John S Wilson
