News from Your Sheriff-August 2022

Welcome to August, Clare County!

For the months of June and July 2022 the Clare County Central Dispatch logged 6,304 incidents, with your deputies handling 4,062 of those incidents. Clare City Police responded to 1,164; other law enforcement handled 434; area fire departments had 266; and MMR Ambulance responded to 383 calls. Currently we have 153 people in our jail which consist of 91 locals, four Diverted Felons, and 58 Federal.

We are nearing the first day of school for all three schools in the county. We have new liaisons going into Harrison and Farwell schools this year. Deputy David Aldrich will be the liaison for Harrison Community Schools and Deputy Riley Olson will be the liaison for the Farwell Area Schools. Both deputies bring several years of experience with them.

It’s always an exciting time of year when school starts back up. Both Harrison and Clare start back on Aug. 22, with Farwell starting back on Aug. 24. Please be extra cautious driving around the schools and bus stops. And please pay extra attention to school buses and make sure that you stop for them when directed to.

Rest assured that the Clare County Sheriff Office, Clare City Police, and the Michigan State Police will ensure the safety of our students. We will address every threat with the utmost attention and they will be investigated to the full extent. We will not stand for any threats of harm toward any of our students or staff in this county.

We are finishing up our budget process and I would like to thank our County Administrator Lori Phelps. Lori has worked hand-in-hand with us in preparing our budget for this next fiscal year. In September our west parking lot and the part of Fourth Street that is ours will be torn up and redone. We have five new patrol units we were able to purchase and are awaiting setup. Like everything else, we are waiting on equipment that is on back order for those units.

We have a new deputy, Deputy Zach Noble, who is just finishing up his FTO [Field Training Officer] training and will be out on solo patrol after this week. Good luck, Deputy Noble!

I want to thank the Farwell Schools for allowing us to hold the funeral for Mounted Deputy Nichole Shuff in your beautiful auditorium. I want to thank all who gave and donated something that helped us out in honoring her. This was a horrible tragedy that took Nichole’s life. Her heart was to give, be a servant to all and lost her life doing it. You will always be with us, Deputy Shuff, never forgotten.
