With a heavy heart yet with profound gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the peaceful passing of Maynard Preston Vandercook, affectionately known as Marv, on January 17, 2025, at his home. Born on April 29, 1934, in Fenton, Michigan, Marv's journey through life was marked by his spirited nature, his exceptional handiness, and his unwavering friendliness that touched all who knew him.
Marv's early years in Fenton laid the foundation for a lifetime of dedication and hard work. He found his calling with Fisher Body in Pontiac, Michigan, where he honed his skills as a carpenter within General Motors. His meticulous craftsmanship and steadfast work ethic were not just evident in his profession but also in his personal passions. Marv's love for working in his wood shop was paralleled only by his enthusiasm for building and collecting vintage cars, a hobby that brought him immense joy and a sense of accomplishment.
Beyond his work and interests, Marv's true legacy lies in the loving family he nurtured alongside his cherished sister, the late Donna Kemph, his brother-in law, the late George Kemph, and his nephew, the late Brian Kemph. He was a pillar of strength and support for his daughters, Susan Hampton and her husband Robert, Gwen Newton and her husband Richard, and his son, Robert Vandercook and his wife Beverly. Marv's wisdom and spirit will live on through his four grandchildren, Kelsey Chaudoin and her husband Steve, Kendra Brown, Jessie Newton and his wife Lindsey, and Samuel Newton, his eight great-grandchildren, and his nephew Louis Kemph, and his wife Lisa, who will continue to be inspired by his life.
Throughout his life, Marv's presence was a source of comfort and happiness to his family and friends. His ready smile and generous nature made him a friend to many, and his home was often filled with laughter and the warmth of his company. Marv was a man who could fix anything, a skill that made him the go-to handyman in the neighborhood, and a storyteller who could captivate any audience with tales of his adventures and the intricacies of restoring classic automobiles.
As we bid farewell to Marv, we reflect on a life that exemplified the best of what it means to be spirited, handy, and friendly. His memory will be cherished and kept alive not only through the beautiful works he created with his hands but also through the countless lives he touched with his heart.
Maynard Preston Vandercook's story is not one of an end but a continuation through the lives of those he loved and who loved him. We take comfort in knowing that his legacy will endure, just as the sturdy furniture he crafted and the gleaming cars he restored will stand the test of time.
