Local, Area Projects Progressing

Posted

HARRISON – Various projects are underway in Harrison and the local area, from recreation to roadways to retail.

Harrison’s Town Square project has been in the works for the past four years-plus, and after much patience and a few setbacks, it is now coming together. Nearly all elements of the project have been procured and will be installed in stages. The major elements, the splash pad area and the bandshell structure are in process, with the splash pad expected to be completed in time for the Aug. 23-24 Harrison Street Fair.

The other major project in Harrison is the street grinding and repaving on Lake, Park and Spruce streets. Those streets have been ground and are being graded in preparation for paving. The paving has been contracted to Reith Riley, which has been subject to a strike by Operating Engineers Local 324. Upon inquiry Monday, Tracey Connelly, city manager/clerk, said that the strike has not affected the street work in Harrison. That is further evidenced by the paving work being done on Spruce Street early Tuesday morning.

A third area project which has generated considerable interest is the new Dollar General store being erected on East Townline Lake Road in Dodge City. Excavation, foundation work, grading and concrete slab work has gone in the typical rapid pace seen with virtually all the Dollar General sites. It currently sports its steelwork, along with a “Now Hiring” sign. Continuing the “no lost daylight” jobsite work, as of Monday evening the east half of the front masonry wall was in place. By 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, half of the remaining front masonry was complete. A second and now highly used Dollar General store was built last year at the U.S. 127/Arnold Lake Road interchange. The Dodge Lake store will be the third such store serving the Harrison area.
