Lake Man Arrested for Explosion at Clare Storage Unit

David Hannaford, age 36 of Lake, was charged today by the Clare County Prosecutor’s Office with:  Explosives – Placing Near Property Causing Physical Injury. He was arraigned in 80th District Court by Magistrate Steven Worpell and his bond was set at $200,000 cash / surety. Mr. Hannaford is the renter of the storage facility unit where the explosion occurred. He remains lodged in the Clare County Jail.  

The joint investigation with the ATF, MSP, and Sheriff’s Officials remains ongoing.

The victims were Brittany Davis, age 27 of Mt. Pleasant, and Amanda Wonsey, age 44 of Shepherd. Sheriff’s Officials are told they are listed in stable condition and recovering from their injuries. The investigation remains ongoing by the ATF and Sheriff’s Officials.    

On 10/26/21 at approximately 12:30 p.m. Central Dispatch received a report of an explosion in which it was reported a box blew up in someone’s hand at the storage sheds on Maple near Grant in Grant Township. It was reported that two females, ages 27 and 44, were injured with one complaining of leg and injury and the other of ear injury. The victims had driven themselves to the Clare Hospital for treatment. The MSP Bomb Squad is responding to check the storage facility and vehicle driven by the victims.  

Sheriff Deputies were assisted by Clare Police, the Clare Fire Department, Mobile Medical Response Ambulance, the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
