Hollar Takes 1st in Air Rifle Competition

Mattie Hollar shoots with American Legion Post #404 affilaited with Harrison Sportsman Junior Club’s Rifle Team. In January, Mattie competed in the 19th Annual American Legion Air Rifle Championship. Mattie show for first place in Michigan in the Sporter Air Rifle class. There were 57 sporter class competitors in our state. The National American Legion awarded her plaque to commemorate her State Championship. She serves at Team Captain of the Junior Rifle Team. She has been shooting at Harrison Sportsman’s Junior Club for three years, competing in both Air Rifle and Smallbore events. Currently she is working to finish Distinguisher Expert in NRA Marksmanship Qualification.

Mattie is a Senior at Harrison High School. Mattie plays trombone in high school marching band. She is a member of the National Honor Society and 4-H. Her father, Joel Hollar lives in Harrison and her mother Mary Duesbout and sister Lily reside in Lanesboro, MN.

The Harrison Sportman Junior Club is affiliated with the American Legion, NRA, and CMP in their own name. They fund raise annually and have replaced most of Harrison Sportsman Club’s 1970 model vintage air rifles and smallbore rifles. We teach and provide equipment for entry level shooting using Olympic and NCAA courses of fire. The coaching staff are certified by the NRA, and USA Shooting, and follow national standards. Head coach Gary Von Schmittou is an American Legion Post #404 member.

We use the facilities of and are grateful for the support of Harrison Sportsman Club. We shoot on Thursday’s from 6-8 p.m., September to July. Cost is $2 weekly. The public is welcome.
