It was close after the first quarter. From there, the Harrison girls’ basketball team controlled things in a big way. As a result, the Lady Hornets won their season opener on Tuesday, Dec. 3, when they took down visiting Coleman 49-19 in a non-conference clash.

“It was a good opening win for us and a good game to get the ball rolling,” head coach Ryan Carlstrom said. “I think the girls had some first game jitters, and it showed with the amount of turnovers we had. Overall, I was very pleased with our defensive effort. We have to keep working hard at practice between games to work on taking better care of the ball better. But like I said, great first game and hopefully we can keep the momentum going.”

The Hornets led just 5-4 after the first quarter. Harrison found the right switch in the second, and pulled away to lead 24-9 at the half. They continued to dominate in the third and fourth quarters and carried a 37-12 lead into the final frame.

The Hornets were led by Lydia Kendall with nine points and six steals while Hayley Neff was able to put in four points and track down four rebounds. Janessa O’Day also had seven points and four assists.

Harrison (1-0 overall) was at Pinconning on Tuesday for their first Jack Pine Conference game. They will head to Gladwin today (Thursday) and they’ll return home for their final game before the holiday break on Tuesday, Dec. 17, to go up against Meridian.
