Asked Harrison boys basketball head coach Brad Carlstrom about last year’s three-win season, and he had some positive things to say.

“Lots of growth for an extremely young team with no seniors,” he said.

Ask him about the upcoming 2024-25 season, and he can’t help but be really, really positive.

“We expect to hit the ground running,” he said. “We have high expectations and want to compete night in and night out.”

While they were without a senior last year, they’ll play with five on the roster this year. Plus, they have a wealth of underclassmen to tap into as well.

“(We’re working on) building off what we have been working on for the past couple of years,” Carlstrom said. “Good solid team defense, playing for one another, high IQ basketball, and a team willing to do more than any other team.”

Returning to the team this year will be seniors Kaleb Williams (guard), Talan Hamilton (forward), Logan Williams (forward), Will Clark (guard), Alec Clark (forward) and junior Gavin VanBuren (guard, forward). Sophomore point guard Matthew Latunski also returns to the team.

Joining the team this year will be juniors Daniel Stewart (forward), Andrew Teebo (guard, forward), Jorden Montero (guard) as well as sophomores Kelton Carlstrom (guard), Adin Brewer (forward), Jayden Bobzien (guard) and Nyxon Rhodes (point guard).

“Every player can lead in their own way. I expect our leaders to look for opportunities to pick their brothers up when they need it and to put the team first,” Carlstrom said. “Our team goals are to play to our potential. When that happens, the wins follow. (We want) Commitment and unselfishness at all times. If we are all about the team, then we will be successful.”

Now with two divisions, the Jack Pine Conference is even more rugged than before. For the time being though, Carlstrom doesn’t want his team to get too caught up in where they fall in the league landscape.

“I am only concerned with what we are doing,” he said. “I hope all the other teams look past us and underestimate our abilities. I know our potential and where this team's ceiling is. And I am excited.

Harrison hosted Coleman on Wednesday in their season opener and hosts Chippewa Hills on Monday. Their first JPC contest will take place down in Shepherd on Wednesday, Dec. 4.

“Victory,” Carlstrom said of his hopes for early season games. “Setting the tone early is going to be key for us.”
