The Farwell girls’ basketball team had a tough season last winter, including a mid-season coaching change. They now have head coach Chloe Haring on board for her first season with the program, and she’s ready to get the Lady Eagles rolling.

“The team this year is a lot of fun but have had a lot of coaching issues in the past that has caused them to lose confidence and have a lack of fundamentals,” Haring said. “In practice we’ve had to go back to some fundamentals and also just building back the confidence. When they are confident, they do some really great things at the hoop.”

Returning to the team that went 4-17 overall a year ago will be seniors Haiden Cassiday, Nora Z., Addyson Thormeier and sophomore Janelle Fouts.

“I’m expecting Nora and Haiden to be some big senior leaders,” Haring said. “They’ve been in the program for a long time and are great kids that aren’t afraid to lead. On the younger side, Janelle I think also will be a great leader, she’s one that never misses a day in or out of season.”

New to the team will be senior Ivy Frisch, juniors Jacey Stover and Paris Gutierrez and sophomores Teconnama Hammond, Mia Dailey and Rhylee Wladysiak.

“Some team goals are to enjoy it and help build the program back up,” Haring said. “In the younger grades, we see number issues so if the varsity team is able to get some wins and look like they’re enjoying it, I think it will encourage young kids to get out and play. For a good season, I think the girls just have to get after it. Sometimes we see some laziness and some doubt, but if they want it bad enough I think we could be a dominant team in the league.”

The Eagles will play in the Jack Pine Conference Division 2 this year, but will still play teams in the larger division as well.

“The teams to beat, for us, are Meridian being that they’re one of the best in the small school group, and then of course Clare, holding that cross-town rivalry with them,” Haring said. “The hope is that with this first year we can stack up somewhere in the middle. I’m aiming for .500 on the season and I think that’s pretty achievable with the team I have.”

Farwell had its season opener on Monday at Manton and they also host Pinconning today (Thursday) and they’ll travel to take on Meridian on Tuesday. They compete again when they head to Clare on Thursday, Dec. 12.

“The first few games of the season are some tough ones,” Haring said. “We have both Meridian and Clare the second week. The main hope is to learn a few things and hopefully get at least one win in those first four games to start. I think opening with some harder teams can be both a good thing and a bad thing so hopefully we are able to find the good.”
