On paper, Farwell’s 60-20 loss to Manistee in their boys basketball season opener on Monday, Nov. 25 might not have looked like a good showing. The Eagles though left feeling pretty good about how things went, especially considering just how good Manistee is expected to be this year.
“It was a solid first outing for our guys,” head coach Mason Branigan said. “We went up against a very skilled and fundamentally sound team. The key for us moving forward is cutting down on turnovers and handling pressure better. Most of their points came off fast breaks, but when we slowed them down and forced them into the half-court, they struggled to score. Once we get our offense clicking and find our rhythm, we’re going to be a tough team to beat.”
Manistee led the game 24-6 after the first quarter. The Eagles got a pair of field-goals by Walker Brown in the second, but they were still well behind at the half, 35-12.
Seth Burkhart knocked down a shot in the third, and the Manistee lead entering the fourth was 59-15.
Asher Yarhouse had all four of his points in the fourth quarter. Brown and Burkhart had four points each as well, Mason Esterline and Dylan Mitchell added three points apiece and Rylee Sprague hit two free throws in the first quarter to account for his two points.
Farwell (0-1 overall) had a home contest with Ashley on Monday, played at Bullock Creek on Wednesday in their Jack Pine Conference opener, they’ll head to Pinconning Friday for another league game and host JPC foe Meridian on Wednesday.
