The Farwell boy’s basketball team played their closest game of the season on Monday, Dec. 16. They were hosting Merrill for a non-conference match-up, and they came close to picking up their first win, before ultimately falling, 47-43.

“It was a hard-fought game and our team delivered its best offensive performance of the season,” head coach Mason Branigan said. “We’re still a young team, learning how to close out and win tight games. That said, the progress we’ve made since the start of the season is evident and I’m proud of how far we’ve come.”

In the first quarter, Wyatt Vanbuskirk hit two field-goals and Walker Brown drained a three and the Eagles were able to go into the second quarter tied up at 13-13. Dylan Mitchell had a big second quarter, hitting a three and getting seven points total in the frame, but the Vandals pulled ahead 27-24 at the half.

Mason Esterline scored seven points in the third and Rylee Sprague sank a three, and the Eagles pulled within 35-34 entering the fourth.

Vanbuskirk netted five more points in the final quarter, but it wasn’t enough to put Farwell out in front.

The Eagles had Vanbuskirk and Esterline net 11 points apiece. Mitchell finished with seven, Seth Burkhart was able to score five points, Brown and Sprague each hit a three pointer to account for their three points, Tristan Zatt had two points and adding one was Asher Yarhouse.

Farwell (0-7 overall) had a home contest with Kalkaska on Friday and will play at Chippewa Hills after the new year, Jan. 8. They will also play at Beaverton on Jan. 10.
