The Clare girls basketball team had it all working for them on Thursday. The Lady Pioneers were hosting rival Farwell in a Jack Pine Conference meeting, and they used some solid defense and an effective offense to claim a 60-7 victory.

“We played really aggressive defense in the first quarter,” Clare head coach Shane Kelly said.

We are working on some stuff that we wanted to work on and that transitioned over (to this game). All 13 girls played quit a bit, everyone was doing their job and getting out and running, trapping and playing good defense. We are not hitting on offense the way I think we can, but there’s some good things we did and we will keep working to get better.”

The Pioneers jumped on the Eagles for a 26-1 lead after the first quarter and they led 36-4 at the half and 52-7 after three.

Tessa Kelly led all scorers with 17 points while Kendra Fouts put in 14, Addison McMillan netted eight and Olivia Forsberg netted seven.

“Tessa and Kendra scored like they usually do, they didn’t play much in the second half, so it was a lot in the first half,” Kelly said. “Forsberg has been playing really good defense and McMillan has upped her game a lot too. Everything we have been doing, we have been getting off of our defense and into transition. When we are in the half court, we are moving the ball, being patient and that is coming with the more reps that we get.”

For the Eagles, Janelle Fouts scored three points while getting two apiece were Mia Dailey and Addyson Thormeier.

Farwell also lost at JPC foe Meridian on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 68-16. Details were not available for this contest.

The Eagles (1-3 overall, 1-2 JPC) were at home against St. Louis on Tuesday, head to Midland Calvary Baptist on Thursday and will be off until Jan. 7 when they have a home contest with Chippewa Hills.

“Struggled bad in both games this past week, hoping to pick it up this upcoming week and get some wins,” Farwell head coach Chloe Haring said.

Clare also battled it out with visiting Ogemaw Heights on Tuesday, Dec. 10. The Pioneers won this contest handily as well, 59-27.

“It was (good), a couple shots started falling, everyone was really getting involved and the great thing is this year so far is we’ve had 10 or 11 girls have scored in a game, where last year we could only have five girls score,” Kelly said. “The amount of minutes everyone is playing is awesome. It is spread out a lot across the whole team, there’s been some really good stuff.”

The Pioneers led 13-4 after one and then took control of things with a big second quarter, claiming a 31-14 lead at the half. They also carried a 46-21 after the next quarter break.

In this one Fouts led things with 14 points and McMillan hit double figures too, getting 10. Maddison Jones and Breeze Yarger put in eight points.

“Jones and Yarger did a good job that game with their intensity and McMillan (did good) attacking the basket and getting up and down the court,” Kelly said. “There’s been a lot of good things.”

Clare (2-1 overall, 2-1 JPC) was at home against Standish-Sterling on Tuesday, hosts Beal City on Thursday and will return after the new year to play at Ithaca on Jan. 7.
