Clare knew that going into Thursday’s season opener at Shepherd was going to be a tough battle. The Lady Pioneers didn’t have the Jack Pine Conference game go the way they would have liked though, as they dropped the contest on a score of 32-23.

“We didn't play the way I expected us to come out and play,” head coach Shane Kelly said. “If we want to have a different outcome we need more effort.  We have had two really good practices since the game, and we will see a different team moving forward.  No excuses but it was our first game of the season with two straight days of no practice it didn't go well.  I am really excited for the girls and the future of this team.”

The Pioneers faced just a 12-10 deficit at the half, and they were still down a basket at the half, 18-15. The Lady BlueJays pulled away in the third though as Clare’s offense stalled out and claimed a 26-17 lead entering the fourth.

Kendra Fouts led the team with nine points while Tessa Kelly added four points, and she tracked down nine rebounds as well.

“We need more effort and intensity as a whole unit, and we will,” Kelly said.

Clare (0-1 overall, 0-1 JPC) had a home contest with Ogemaw Heights on Tuesday, host Farwell today (Thursday) and will play at home again on Tuesday, Dec. 17 against Standish-Sterling.
