Clare Fire Dept Respond to Apartment Fire

At 7:12 p.m. Saturday Feb. 5, the Clare Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at the Gateway Village Apartment complex in Clare.

On arrival, the department found heavy smoke in the west wing of the building, and occupants were being evacuated to the lobby by the Clare Police Department. One apartment on the third floor contained smoke and fire which fire fighters quickly put out with a fire extinguisher.

One female sustained non-life-threatening injuries and smoke inhalation. There were no other injuries and residents returned to their homes after the smoke was cleared from the building.

Clare Fire Chief Jim Chapman applauded the 80 residents for remaining calm and following instructions from emergency responders.

The cause of fire is under investigation.

Clare Fire was assisted by the Clare Police Department, Michigan State Police, Clare County Sheriff Department, MMR Ambulance, and the Surrey Fire Department.
