JAMES WILLIAM MURPHY

James William Murphy -
age 81 of Coleman, formerly of Corpus Christi, TX, passed away Sunday,
May 2, 2010 at home. He was born June 12, 1928 in Shelby, MI the son of
Edwin James Murphy and Eliza Catherine Althouse. He married Donna
Mussell on June 11, 1949. Jim is survived by his wife Donna; six
children, Gary and wife Mary Lou Murphy of Robstown, TX, Karen Hill
(Michael Peterson) of Grove City, OH, Janice and husband Ralph Marten of
Harrison, MI, Jean and husband Richard Hidey of Harrison, MI, Carol
Brasington of Smithville, TX and David Murphy and wife Mildred of
Coleman, MI; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and
great-great grandchildren; a sister-in-law and four brother-in-laws. Jim
was preceded in death by father Edwin and step-mother Susan Green
Murphy, mother Eliza Althouse Murphy; two daughters, Pauline Benson and
Tamra Rinald; one son, Larry Murphy; one brother and one sister. Funeral
services will be held 11 AM on Thursday, May 6, 2010 at Stocking Funeral
Home, Harrison. Pastor Jim Young will officiate with burial in South
Hart Cemetery(Star Hill), Hart, MI on Friday, May 7, 2010 at 10 AM.

DOROTHY MARIE SHIEL
June 15, 1933 to April 24, 2010
Dorothy Marie Shiel,
76 of Harrison, leaves behind five children; Sandra (Tom) Pretznow of
Holly, MI, Virginia (Buddy) McQuitty of Lancaster, CA, Michael Shiel of
Harrison, Philip Shiel of Cadillac, MI and Brian Shiel of Cadillac, MI.
Six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was predeceased by
her husband, Donald L. Shiel and one grandson.
Per Dorothy’s wishes, cremation took place at Wayne State
University, where 300 students benefitted and countless lives saved,
because of her donation.

BETTY JEAN HOLLIDAY
Betty Jean Holliday,
passed away Monday, May 10, 2010, at her home following a battle with
cancer at age 77 years. The daughter of the late Amos and Dorothy
Thurston was born October 2, 1932 in Midland, Michigan. She married
William Holliday, February 17, 1951. He survives her. She was an active
volunteer with the Mid-Michigan Community Action Agency and the March of
Dimes. She enjoyed camping, scratching off lottery tickets, gardening,
word search books, NASCAR and game shows.
Surviving besides her husband, William, are four daughters, two
sons and their spouses, Carol Raabe and Paul, Saginaw, MI; Janet Walat,
Harrison, MI; Richard and Linda Holliday; Debra Holliday, all of
Midland, MI; Joe and Linda Holliday, St. Charles, MI; Patty and Dan
Little, Harrison, MI; eleven grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren;
two brothers, one sister and their spouses, Herman and Norma Thurston;
Elmer and Grace Thurston; Blanche and Edward Holliday; several nieces
and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, William Holliday, three
brothers, two sisters, William, James, Robert, Margaret and Lydia.
The funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 13,
2010, at the W. L. Case and Co. Funeral Chapel 4480 Mackinaw Rd. Rev.
Jeffrey Williams will officiate with burial in Eastlawn Memorial
Gardens. Friends may call at the Chapel from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00
p.m. Wednesday.

RUSSEL CLARE SPRAGUE
Russel Clare Sprague
- age 82 of Farwell, passed away on Monday, April 19, 2010 at Saginaw
St. Mary’s Hospital. A funeral service was held on Thursday, April 22,
2010 at 11 AM at the Clare Seventh Day Adventist Church. Pastor Russell
Thomas officiated with interment in the Gilmore Township Cemetery.
Friends visited on Wednesday, April 21 from 6 to 8 PM at the
Campbell-Stocking Family Funeral Home in Farwell.
Russell was born on April 30, 1927, the son of Arthur and Grace
(Monroe) Sprague in Harrison, Mi. He was a life-long resident of the
Clare Area, and worked as a Journeyman Mason. He started a business
doing masonry in the Jonesville Area called Keystone Construction. He
loved to hunt and fish and was a member of the Grass Lake Hunting Group.
He was a charter member of Clare Seventh Day Adventist Church. He loved
to dress up as a clown and entertain the children.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Marylou; two sons,
Stephen Russel Sprague of TN, Bradley John Sprague and wife Vanessa of
Leota; two daughters, Dara Gwen John of Farwell, Lynn Ann Sprague of Mt.
Pleasant; one brother Linus Sprague and wife Pat of Farwell, three
sisters, Lola Armstrong of Midland, Birdie Kelly of Harrison, Louise
Crook and husband Arnold of Hillsdale; eight grandchildren, Elizabeth,
Catherine, Heather, Brian, Bradley, Melissa, DeWayne, Anthony; and one

MARY JANE DOWNEY
Mary Jane Downey,
loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed away suddenly at home on
Thursday evening, April 29, 2010 at age 81.
The daughter of the late Leon Anthony and Berniece Dorothy
(Thompson) Dittmar, Mary Jane was born in Detroit on June 25, 1928. She
married William Harold Downey on July 12, 1952. They resided in
Dearborn, Michigan then came to Harrison in 1960 where they owned a
restaurant, The Northward Inn, now Monte’s. She was known for her
delicious homemade pies. In 1972, they sold the restaurant and opened
Downey’s Appliance Center. They served the Clare County area until 1996.
She is survived by her loving husband, Bill; two daughters, Ann
Thayer and her husband, Bill of Harrison; and Sue Tek of Tucson,
Arizona; five grandchildren, Christopher Thayer, Rachel Thayer, Kyle Tek,
Hunter Tek and Noah Tek; one brother, Donald Dittmar of Brighton,
Michigan and his family Denise (Rick) Mittan, Mark (Vicky) Dittmar and
David (Kelly) Dittmar.
In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place and a
private family gathering in her memory will be held. Memorial gifts may
be made to Mid Michigan Home Care.

BONNIE JO HASKELL
Bonnie Jo Haskell,
61 of Harrison, passed away on Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at Mid Michigan
Medical Center, Midland. She was born on October 30, 1948 in Gladwin,
Michigan, the daughter of David Ernest and Mary Jean (Vertner) Roth.
Bonnie married Gary Haskell on July 13, 1966 in Harrison, Michigan. She
had resided in Harrison her entire life. Mrs. Haskell worked for
Ashcraft's Markets for many years and retired from Glen's market. She
enjoyed her grandchildren and loved nature.
Bonnie is survived by her husband, Gary Haskell of Harrison, one
son, Jeff Haskell and wife DeVonna of Harrison, one daughter, Karen
Staley and husband Jared of Midland, two brothers, Larry Roth and wife
Linda of Midland and Jim Roth and wife Cheryl of Indianapolis, Indiana,
her grandchildren, Addy, Matt and Noah and step-grandchildren, Justin,
Brandi, Megan and Erica.
In keeping with Bonnie's wishes, cremation has taken place. A
memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at
the First Congregational Church with Rev. Gerald Baxter officiating.
There will be a gathering time from 12:00 p.m. until the time of the
